Ugandan rebels massacre 192 at camp

REBELS armed with assault rifles, mortars and grenades have attacked a refugee camp in Uganda's north, shooting people as they fled and burning others alive in their huts, killing at least 192 people. Dozens of others were wounded.

The attack on Barloonyo camp in Lira district was one of the worst in recent years by the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) which has been fighting the Ugandan government for 17 years.

“It’s a hopeless situation, we went there this morning with the Lira district police commander and physically counted 192 bodies,” Anjiro told AP today from the town of Lira, 26km south of the camp.

“Children were not spared and many of the bodies we saw were of children.”

Army spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza confirmed the attack, but said he did not know the death toll.

The camp was being guarded by members of a local defence force, who were outnumbered and outgunned, Bantariza said.
