Putin against banning protests

Russian President Vladimir Putin came out today against a controversial new bill that would curb the right to hold public protests for the first time in post-Soviet Russia.

The legislation would bar demonstrations from being held in front of government buildings and allow local authorities to name the time and place of registered rallies.

It was opposed by every other party in Russia’s parliament other than United Russia, which holds a two-thirds majority necessary to pass any law, including changes to the constitution.

United Russia rose to power with few policies other than its unwavering support for Putin.

The dispute marks the first time that United Russia and Putin have crossed paths.
