China rallies envoke issues with Japan

The Japanese Foreign Ministry has summoned China's ambassador to Tokyo in the wake of anti-Japanese rallies that drew about 10,000 people in Beijing.

China meanwhile said it had mobilised a huge police force to maintain order during demonstrations.

The violent protests started over a new Japanese history textbook said to play down its own wartime atrocities.

Japan’s foreign minister has announced he will visit China next week.

The current anti-Japanese feeling in China is also fuelled by the prospect of Japan possibly obtaining a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
