India: 13 villagers killed by rebels

Rebels in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand have killed at least 13 people in a remote village, police say.

200 Maoists raided Bhelwa village in Girdih district on Sunday.

Villagers who are locared in difficult terrain surrounded by forest and is difficult to reach, were targeted as they had formed a self-defence group to counter the rebels.

The rebels continued their terror on Monday evening when they stopped a train in Jharkhand and held the passengers captive for more than 12 hours.

The rebels freed the passengers early on Tuesday and left the area.

More than 6,000 people have died during the rebels’ 20-year fight for a communist state in tribal areas of India, including Jharkhand.
