Brazil: Race charge for player

A Brazilian football player has been prosecutored with racism after insulting an opponent during a match.

The Brazillian player, who denies the charge, shouted “monkey” at a black player and is accused of making a racist gesture.

Racism is a criminal offence in Brazil, and if found guilty, Carlos could face up to three years in prison.

But prosecutors said he could avoid jail if he printed out 10,000 leaflets condemning racism and distributed them himself at sporting events.

The leaflets would have to say “We are all equal” and “No to racism”.

In March, football’s world governing body, Fifa, agreed on new anti-racism measures.
