Kofi Annan sees NATO African role

NATO could play a welcome role in helping with the growing number of international peacekeeping missions in Africa, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said yesterday.

He noted that the UN Security Council last month authorised a new peacekeeping mission in the western African nation of Ivory Coast, and that other operations were likely on the way.

“Should such a surge take place, strong support from NATO would be tremendously helpful,” Mr Annan said. “NATO’s increasing willingness to ‘go global’ presents important opportunities, in particular for Africa.”

He also said that NATO could work together with the United Nations in Iraq, where the world body has said increased security is essential to organise planned elections in the coming months.
