Fifth body in Madrid terror hideout

Spanish police believe they have found a fifth body in the wreckage of an apartment blown up by suspected Islamic militants thought to be behind the March 11 bomb attacks in Madrid.

“Analyses should confirm the existence of five different bodies… even though we cannot be 100 per cent sure right now.”

A 41-year-old police officer was also killed in yesterday’s blast. Eleven others were wounded, three of them seriously.

Interior Minister Angel Acebes said three of the suspects who died had been identified, including the suspected ringleader of the Madrid attacks, Serhane Ben Abdelmajid Fakhet, known as the “Tunisian”.

The badly-mutilated body of the fourth suspect wearing an explosives belt was discovered floating in a swimming pool next to the building.

Four other suspects arrested in connection with the March 11 attacks were freed on Friday. Fifteen people have been charged and five others are being questioned.
