British teen in court over ‘bomb plot’

A 17-year-old, who was one of nine people arrested in British police raids last week that apparently foiled a bomb plot, was remanded in custody Wednesday after appearing in court.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with conspiracy to cause an explosion.

The teenager, unshaven and dressed in a black sweatshirt and black jogging trousers, simply replied, “yes” when asked if he understood the charges.

He was ordered to appear in court again next Wednesday.

The teenager was the youngest of nine men, all British citizens who are reportedly mostly of Pakistani descent, who were taken into custody last week when police raided locations in and around London. None of the others, aged 18 to 32, have yet been charged.

Police raids on March 30 netted half a tonne of ammonium nitrate fertiliser that could be used to make explosives.
