Car bombs halted, suspects held

SEVERAL car bombs were intercepted and a number of suspects arrested by Jordanian security forces, thwarting several terrorist attacks, the government said today.

It did not give precise details of either the number of cars or arrests, but a government official later said: “Three trucks and a car were intercepted by security services during a large operation in the north of the country.

The operation was continuing to ensure there were no loose ends, the official said.

Earlier, witnesses told how police halted an explosives-laden car and arrested at least two people following a large operation involving helicopters.

Jordan has tried to crack down on Islamic militants plotting against US and Western interests in the kingdom, and has succeeded in dismantling several cells, including ones linked to al-Qaeda.
