Pakistan back in Commonwealth

Pakistan was readmitted to the Commonwealth today, five years after its membership was suspended following the October 1999 bloodless coup that brought General Pervez Musharraf to power.

The decision was announced by commonwealth secretary-general Don McKinnon after a two-day meeting in London of the nine-nation Commonweath Ministerial Action Group (CMAG).

In Islamabad, Pakistani Information Minister Sheikh Rashid welcomed the decision, saying: “We fully appreciate it”.

McKinnon, reading a statement to reporters, said: “The (CMAG) group welcomed the progress made in restoring democracy and rebuilding democratic institutions in Pakistan … and decided therefore that Pakistan should no longer remain suspended from the councils of the Commonwealth.”
