Voting in Kosovo starts

The people of Kosovo are voting in the second elections for the Kosovo assembly since the province came under United Nations control in 1999.

The future status of the province and security for Kosovo’s Albanian and Serb communities are among the key issues of the campaign.

The election follows a major outbreak of violence in the province.

Riots in March left 19 people dead as Albanian mobs attacked Serbian communities and burned down churches.

The violence highlighted the continuing tensions between the two communities and a deep frustration at the lack of any long-term political solution for the province.
