Uganda: Ceasefire over

Uganda's army will not extend a ceasefire with rebels in the north which has just ended.

Army spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza said the rebels had left the ceasefire zone to regroup its fighters and develop new military strategies.

“The ceasefire is officially over. Anything can happen now,” he told the New Vision newspaper. The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) is notorious for abducting children to become sex slaves and fighters.

The 18-year conflict in northern Uganda has driven 1.6 million people into refugee camps and triggered what aid workers call one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters.
